Where I’m From Audiovisual Poem Assessment 3
This assessment i choose to focus the poem on my dad. I already showed where i’m from through my first assessment and showed my connections to home. I also thought that my dad’s story was a lot more interesting and could be a good experiment to see if i could show his story without dialogue. The original idea came about from watching a video called ”Nostalgia” by Shivangi Gupta. I saw the different color filters as a way of going from present to past a good way of showing off my idea. even though i still didn’t know how to change the color, i wanted to still try and tell the story. But i was difficult with my dad being over 65 years old and having very few pictures and espescially no video back then, so there was very little footage of him until his 50s. The camera shots i capture in current time would look very found-footage like to give it a more realistic feel and this was a way to show the difference between the past and present. At first, it was going to be that i would have an old timey music score going behind pictures of the past to establish a theme and slowly transition through the times of cinema until i get to the end where it be live footage. Color is an integral part of cinema and its evolution from black and white to color is a strong journey and would have been a good element in my film. The Youtube video ”1926: the origin of color cinema” gave good insight into the first uses of color and how it shaped the future of film as a whole. When the project got further down the line, i instead just focused on my dad’s story rather than the other aspects behind it. When i thought about how i was going to show the past, i didn’t know how i was going to be able to do it without putting in photos, so i resorted to doing that after failures with the camera and having very little real photos of places in England. i decided to use no dialogue as a challenge to see if i could tell my dad’s story through only visuals and also it was supposed to go with the old film style with no dialogue being used in film, but that part never came into play. The live footage i got i wanted to all be obvious, but not to in-your face. i wanted each part to have some form of ”where i’m from” in it, either through actual description through pictures or footage, or through bits of music and such. Though the execution has changed, i wanted the focus to be on my dad and his life story. The music that i put in i wanted to have an identity to each and say something while i couldn’t like show a time period or a place through music if it sounded correct to the time period or environment. This project was to a way to show my dad’s life story and as an experiment to see how much i could demonstrate ”where i’m from” without any dialogue and only through audio cues and visuals.
